    Virgin vs Sky

    Virgin Media Sky

We have Virgin Media (formerly NTL) and I think it’s great. The broadband is always on and the TV isn’t bad. I don’t watch it much but if I did I really like the direction VM is taking right now with VOD and content deals with US providers.

The problem at the moment revolves around the constant bitterness between Sky and Virgin over the Sky basic channels Sky one, sky news and a couple of others not really worth mentioning. Virgin have said that Sky have been pressuring them into paying around double what they did previously for these channels and have said that they will get rid of the channels from the virgin lineup if Sky don’t offer to come to a fair agreement.

The problem for VM is that this probably isn’t a smart move because as far as many subscribers go, Sky one is one of the main reasons they subscribe. I’ve been following the thread on virginmedia.com and a lot of people are threatening to move to sky if the channels do go, despite the fact that Virgin have been saying recently that they have signed broadcast rights to lots of US content.

Virgin are saying that the extra money that they will have to pay and extra charges that they will have to pass on to their customers is not fair on them but the fact is a lot of people will just not see the bigger picture and not realise that they can just buy the DVD of the series they want to watch whether it be 24 or Lost. I have to say I do like to watch the new episodes of the simpsons and old futurama but in the last year or so I always miss the new episodes and therefore might as well just buy the season DVD.

Virgin I think are in a very difficult position at the moment. If they don’t keep the sky channels they face people switching to sky and if they do keep them they face a backlash over any price increases from the people who don’t watch any of the channels in question. Then again surely the damage will be significantly less if they just keep the existing lineup for at least one more year and see what happens, then review the situation again next year.

    Only 17.8?

If you’re a subscriber to engadget or follow gaming news online at various indie blogs / news sites like digg, you will probably have seen the below graph. It shows the power usage of all three gaming systems and an average pc (pc’s vary quite a lot).

Simply put the Wii destroys everyone else. The PC comes in unsurprisingly the worst and the PS3 is second followed by the 360. Here’s the chart if you havn’t already seen it.

Apple and Cisco Settle on iPhone(s)

I’m glad that they’ve come to an agreement that finally makes the Apple iPhone name totally secure and in the past. These are two companies I’m a fan of so to see them disagree so publically over the name wasn’t what I was hoping for. Since I and pretty much everyone else was shocked that they actually did call it iPhone I’ve been wondering why but am also glad because I couldn’t imagine a phone from Apple with any other name.

Now it’s time to get back to looking forward to that iPhone-esque multi-touch iPod that they have to release soon. I’m itching to watch video podcasts on an iPod but I just can’t bring myself to buy a 5.5G iPod video because it’s only a matter of time before the 6G version hits. It’s especially frustrating because I’m having trouble fitting my music and podcasts on my 4gb nano to the point where I’m getting constant error messages.

Also can’t forget on the Cisco / Linksys side that I’m also pretty excited about the new 802.11n routers they have. When the broadband speeds get up to that sort of level to warrent paying for an upgrade to our current WRT54G I’ll be getting one.

SNES outselling PS3, nevermind PS2 or Wii, Console War Thoughts…

It seems like I have to mention I’m not a fanboy before most of my posts recently, namely nintendo and apple ones, but anyway, I’d just like to mention I have a PS2 before I get started.

I’m just pretty shocked by the fact that on Amazon.com, pre-owned snes’s were outselling both the PS3 premium and core versions yesterday. Now I can understand this because of the nostalgia brought back recently by the virtual console. Gizmodo mentions this in their post. However, it’s still a pretty huge thing because you would think even the small number of people buying the PS3’s that are available would surely be more than are buying pre-owned SNES consoles on Amazon.

It seems to have dissapeared from the list now but you would have to think that it is only gone from the list due to supply not meeting demand and also that the seller who clearly had loads to sell, would have kept selling them had he been able to gather more and is probably trying to do just that.

So now back to the PS3, I haven’t talked much about the console war recently so it’s time to refresh the blog with my current thoughts. I’m currently more excited about the PS3 than I’ve been before (mostly due to motorstorm) but at the same time I’m despairing at the constant bashing the console is taking from the news blogs and digg among others, plus of course the price tag for the console and the rip-off games. As far as the PS3 goes I may be persuaded to buy one when the price comes down to somewhere near £300 (but not the core version without wi-fi) and games don’t cost the rediculous £49.99 which is disgraceful considering I was very wary of what games I buy at £40, nevermind £50. I love the fact that I got excite truck on the release date for the wii for £35.

Another requirement for me to get a PS3 is for Blu-Ray to win the format war of at least some real progress with interoperability like the warner ultimate disk format (or whatever it’s called) take place. It’s a big ask but it’s not beyond the realm of possibility in a years time if they sell enough PS3’s (every single one of which is a blu-ray player). It’s really strange because personally I like HD DVD. Then at the same time I like Apple and Sony pictures (spiderman movies) who both as far as I know support blu-ray exclusively. Though there have been rumours that Apple will support both and not one exclusively which would be a very good move as far as I’m concerened.

However, I really am liking the state of the Xbox 360 right now and I’m seriously considering making a joint purchase on a 360 bundle from GAME.co.uk which are really well priced. I’m not sure if I will go for one at this point based on a couple of issues. Firstly there have been a lot of technical issues with the 360 so maybe it would be a good idea to wait until the rumoured (possibly black) zephr comes out. Especially if they lower the price of the current systems. It definitely seems like an advisable thing to do to wait for Zephr to come out with HDMI and a bigger HD. If it exists it will be a great buy because based on the rumoured specs, it will be quieter, hopefully more reliable and have the IPTV function.

Quickly going back to the game pricing issue, I’m really just confused as to how they come to these prices. I mean take motorstorm for example. It is at least to me the most graphically impressive PS3 European launch title and probably the most graphically impressive title so far. It costs a fairly standard £40 but I would say with this title you get pretty much what you pay for. Resistance, heralded by pretty much everyone as the best rest of the world launch title also costs £40. So why then do Virtua Fighter 5 and Virtua Tennis 3 both cost £50. Is it because Sega have been feeling higher R+D costs for making these games? I don’t know but what I do know is I wouldn’t be too happy to put down £50 on a game after £425 for the console not to mention a second SIXAXXIS.

As I said before, I managed to purchase Excite Truck on GAME’s site for £35 on launch day so as far as price goes for both hardware and software, Nintendo are really leading the way.

One thing I’m not so happy about right now though is that I feel stuck with my wii that bricked as far as online capability goes when I first connected it. The UK company assigned to tech support by Nintendo haven’t answered my email and we put the phone down when it said our call would be answered in 17 minutes, while we were expected to pay for every second of that waiting time. I’m somewhat surprised that there is still such a considerable waiting time considering I’ve been waiting since december to even contact them about the issue waiting for the rush to end.

I really feel as if at this rate I’ll have to buy a new Wii when my warrenty runs out in december this year if I want to be able to play online with any future wii titles as well as play any virtual console downloads and get new channels. I’d really love to be pleasantly surprised and proved wrong that no company actually responds to emails even if their address is posted in the user manual. Email me and prove that you were just busy.

    Some new smartphones released

    BlackBerry 8800

I’m liking some of the new stuff released today by RIM and others. The new BlackBerry 8800 looks really nice. Although I wouldn’t buy one over an iPhone because it lacks a lot of the stuff I want, it’s still easily the best looking full qwerty keyboard equipped blackberry so far, learning from the pearl in many design aspects including most notably the “pearl” trackball.

Motorola and Nokia back both released new smartphones. Motorola has two new versions of the Q and Nokia have released a new member of the E series. I don’t know much about the E series but the Q is now going to be available worldwide and not just in the US and Canada. As I said there are two new versions of the Q. One looks exactly like the old one but now has HSDPA, and the other has had a visual redesign to look like a wider slvr phone. This version has quad band gsm and EDGE which isn’t 3G which is dissapointing as I’d really like the new look version with this, but also because I don’t think the 3G one is coming out in the UK, although I might be wrong.

    Moto Qs

I probably wouldn’t pay the money for any of these phones but I do like the design of the Q and the BB 8800. The things that would put me off would be poor integration with OSX, lack of wi-fi or 3G, a media player I can’t get much use out of among other things.

I’m not being an Apple fanboy but the iPhone really does do everything I want. I’m probably not going to get one of those either but if I was to go the smartphone route sometime soon I’d go with the iPhone over anything else. However I could be tempted by a cool new tytn like model or the follow up to the dash from HTC, or maybe something from Samsung or Sony Ericsson. The problem is, as cool as those phones are, the probably won’t have as nicer interfaces or design as what Apple will come up with in the future.

Steve and Apple pushing for DRM free music

In this column on Apple.com Steve Jobs makes it abundantly clear than he and Apple would openly welcome the abolishing of DRM in favour of completely DRM free music on iTunes and everywhere else.

He is sending a very strong message to the music labels and is really putting Apple in a great position. Surely with this kind of pressure and the very valid points Steve brings up, the music companies can’t keep DRM for much longer.

I hope they don’t and come to the realisation that DRM doesn’t make any difference to music piracy.

Well I did say maybe tomorrow

Well that was interesting. After predicting that you never know what will happen with Apple, they go and do almost what I speculated about. They didn’t announce The Beatles on iTunes, but what they did announce effectively confirms this.

Apple Inc have aquired all the rights to the name Apple. They are leasing the Apple name and logo back to Apple Corps for their use. So does this mean Apple Inc now essentially has a record label? If not then they should have just done an outright purchase of Apple Records.

    No Apple announcment?

There wasn’t an Apple ad at the super bowl but I’m still being cautious because you never know what might be on Apple.com in the morning.

Anyway, I wathed parts of the super bowl and I have to say it’s pretty exciting. Knowing nothing about American Football put me in the same position I was in when I watched the world series, although I know more about baseball than football. Aside from the game, of which I thought the bits I watched were good, I was a bit dissapointed to not hear anything from Apple regarding The Beatles, but the godaddy ad was predictably fun and it was a bonus to see Alex and Kevin there with Candice Michelle and Bob Parsons himself.

I guess the fact that we didn’t hear anything from Apple today and with the impending release of Leopard, they have to be planning another event in the near future I’m sure. Whether it’s this month or later in march or april we’ll have to wait and see but I’m really trying to not buy a new iPod. I really could use a 30gb video one now as I’m having problems fitting all my content on there. I have enough space (barely) but it’s hard to get itunes to listen to you when you say to only put one episode of each podcast on there. It keeps putting all of them on and then telling me I don’t have the space. However I’m still waiting for the 6G widescreen iPod.

I’ve since sort-of-solved the problem by manually updating music and auto-updating podcasts although I say sort of because I still get random errors which don’t mean anything. Like I said I’m really tempted by the video iPod but I’m waiting for the iPhone-like widescreen touch version they have to release at some stage this year. I’m hoping sooner rather than later but seing as the iPhone isn’t out until June in the US and sometime late 07 over here I’m hoping they’re willing to possibly sacrifice some iPhone sales to make way for the hugely anticipated touch iPod standalone with more than 8gb of space.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot but well done Colts.
