Apple are sticking it to Amazon

Well, I don’t know maybe Amazon have sold more, but I was just looking at the image for a title.

Anyway, click here for details on Apple / Disney selling 125 thousand movie downloads in one week since the movie store’s opening. (via AppleInsider).

iPod Nano 2nd Gen review

I just got my new iPod Nano yesterday. I thought it was about time to upgrade from my old iPod Mini I bought in 2004. The new nano may look like a sized down version of the mini but that’s about where the similarities end.

The new nano has the same capacity (4gb) as the old one but seing as my music collection adds up to around 2.3 gb its not a massive concern. The capacity may be the same, but the storage medium has changed dramatically. The Mini, like the iPod had a small hard disk that would whirr away wasting battery life constantly which wasn’t ideal looking back. Now the nano has flash memory (no moving parts) which speeds things up and allows it to use less power.

It has a colour screen which looks really nice and allows you to view album art either small next to the track info or larger on it’s own but pressing the middle button a few times. You can view pictures on the small screen in surprisingly good quality which is a nice feature.

I’m not really bothered about the lack of video on the nano which is one reason I bought it over the iPod. The second reason would be the fact that it costs significantly less than the Mini did, £129 compared to £169 for the mini back a couple of years ago.

Finally, the most obvious reason for upgrading is the difference in size. The nano is so small and light it makes the mini feel like a brick in comparison. The mini was considered small and light enough to not feel it in your pocket (which was true). However, the nano truly is small and light enough to forget your carrying it. It’s a true marvel of engineering and build quality from Apple. I’d advise anyone to go and grab one. Especially people with a mini or earlier ipod.

MacBook Family to get some new additions

Core 2 Duo MacBooks / Pros expected in time for Christmas, according to AppleInsider.

Apple Computer plans to update both its MacBook and MacBook Pro lines of Intel notebook computers in time for the holiday shopping season, but may take some time before it does so, AppleInsider has learned.
People familiar with the matter say development of Core 2 Duo versions of all three models — the 13-inch MacBook, 15-inch MacBook Pro and 17-inch MacBook Pro — are now complete and all that’s left is for Apple marketing to pull the trigger.

But those same people indicate that precise launch dates for the respective models remain fluid and Apple customers should expect the updates to arrive anytime between now and the time Thanksgiving rolls around in late November.

Similarly, it’s unclear whether Apple will launch the new consumer MacBooks and professional MacBook Pro models simultaneously, or if it will space the releases to assure it maintains enough of Intel Corp.’s Core 2 Duo processors to properly facilitate each launch.

Toshiba recalling huge number of laptop batteries too.

Apparently Toshiba also used sony batteries in their laptops. This can’t be good. Dell, Apple, now Toshiba. So how come Sony havn’t recalled any of their laptop batteries, unless Sony don’t use Sony batteries, or have I missed something?

iTV Brainstorming

Some cool names for iTV that aren’t names of TV broadcasters.

  • iVision
  • iView
  • AirPort TV
  • AirPort Vision

Well that’s about as far as my brain will allow me to get. Any ideas?

Google - Apple team-up looks more and more likely

I just posted about this a few days ago just speculating but it’s looking more like it will happen.

In other news, YouTube have partnered with universal music. They will distribute the predictable content, music videos, interviews and stuff. Cool but I thought I heard something about Universal threatening YouTube and MySpace recently calling them “copyright infringers”. Maybe they just made up quickly.

Can mobile net get better?

Well I’m sure it can’t get that much worse. Here are the things I think are wrong with it.

  1. You get charged loads if you aren’t on contract with unlimited net usage.
  2. The screens on most phones are too small to fit anything more than just text and a few small images on.
  3. Even sites with hardly any textual content or easy to navigate sites like blogs can take forever to scroll through because of the size of the screen.
  4. It looks horrible and is only really useful for checking the news or sports scores.

So will the .mobi domain name help. My guess is probably not (at least not in the short term). I mean why do you need to have a domain just for mobiles when you could just go with the current sort-of-standards, m.domain-name.com or domain.com/mob.

I noticed Google.mobi is up now but it’s the same content as m.google.com. So that’s real progression then. I guess the only real advantage in it is it’s more catchy and it will help to spread the word to people who never knew there was such a thing as internet on mobiles.

I think for mobile net to succeed, operators need to stop ripping pay as you go customers off, or offer better bolt-on packages for pay and go people for low, tempting prices. Then phones have to get more net friendly and people have to be aware of how the service can help them, and that they won’t get ripped off by it.

Just incase you’re interested in what .mobi is right now and where it’s going, take a look.

Why you should get a Wii

Nintendo (despite pricing too high in the UK) are really impressing me with the Wii. It has some great games to come, great features (opera browser), wii-mote controller, Wii sports bundled with it etc.The fact that they are so accomodating to gamers in offering them an alternative to the wii-remote in the form of the classic controller which plugs into the remote.

I really like the look of it, it’s so simplistic and reminds me a lot of the classic snes controller while retaining all the features and buttons of the wii-mote.

Pic below.

Plus you can’t forget the nunchuck controller extension that also has movement sensors. In Wii Sports Boxing the nunchuck and remote combine to be both your hands. You can move to dodge and punch your opponents.

Finally, there’s the Zapper extension which is an enclosure for the remote that allows it to play more like a gun than it does normally.

I can’t wait for December 8th.

Yet more video iPod rumours

It’s not even been a week since the “Showtime” event in San Francisco but already people are talking about the “new” iPod video being just a short term thing to keep people interested for just a few months longer so Apple can get their true video iPod out. I guess that’s the natural view to take when Apple hardly changed anything with the 5th gen iPod hardware wise last week.

Some people think we will see another new one before christmas. I highly doubt this because it would leave Apple with a whole load of unsold 5th gen iPods.

Then again maybe they would scrap only the 80gb version in favour of the new touch widescreen model and keep the 30gb version as is, maybe with yet another price cut. If Apple are going to release another one before christmas then they’re running out of time fast.

Then if they were planning to release it early next year it might be a mistake as there is little interest in purchasing new stuff after the holiday buying season. Plus, by next christmas the hype surrounding the new model would have died down so much Apple will be having trouble selling them. Unless they gave them a capacity and battery life a boost or something (similar to what they did on tuesday).

I really have no idea what to think. You never no what to expect with Apple is one thing I’ve learned quickly.

Spot the difference

I just saw this on digg and it made me want to look up this to check the difference. It’s amazing how things can change so quickly in technology / the net. What will these sites look like in another 10 years from now?
